Meiling’s Night Women

The Night Women walked and owned the night at Big Black Box last Tuesday.  Marlon James, Jamaican author’s 2009 novel the Night women provided the inspiration for Meiling’s 2015 collection.  A story of black slave, Lilith, who is propositioned by the Night Women (a group of female slaves) to join in planning a revolt….dark, desperate, devious women.

The ambiance of the Big Black Box was mystical and enchanting as empowered, proud and beautiful as the moon and stars that covered us that night. The show started with a theatrical synopsis accompanied by exerts from the novel. Right away the audience was allured into every movement, word and sound coming from the all corners of The Box. The creative designers infused all aspects of the show into its depiction.

Meiling’s 2016 Collection was stunning. Every piece spoke to a different aspect of the women we are. From the apron-like dresses to the possession of ruffles, the pieces were striking and bold, yet casual and care free. In true Meiling style, the design intricacies gave an element of surprise with hints of reds, open backs, lace trimmings and decorated bandeaus.  Each article of clothing brought a sense of pride and joy, not only to be a woman, but to be a Caribbean woman.

The works of each collaborator for this show were independently jaw-dropping:

  • The opening portrayal choreographed by Deon Baptiste gripped both those gathered and the stillness of the air. A reading by Elisha Bartels saw the words of Marlon James’ novel provoke thoughts as to its influence of the night’s designs.
  • With the light hitting the made-up faces of the models done by Nina Alcantara’s, those in attendance were bewitched. The models paraded with eyes encapsulated by gold foil, lids and lips that matched, and highlighted cheekbones which brought the look together.
  • Camille Charleries’ hairstyles stole hearts. Ranging from big and small afros to sleeked straight looks. Each strand seemingly sculpted purposely.
  • Brianna Mc Carthy was the artistic genius behind the masks showcased that night. Seven masks were exhibited; each striking in black, gold and red. Embellished with diamond studs, lace, and strings, the masks gave a Minshal feel, reminding us of the greatest that abounds in these islands.

In the grande finale, the models formed a circle holding hands and selected models donned the mask of Brianna Mc Cathy.

The congratulations were rolling in as the audience felt as though they “were part of something magnificent!”. The reviewers could not make up their minds as to their favourite piece. Instagram was already flooded with images by the time Meiling took her bow.

Hats off to what we would say is the biggest collaboration of 2015, Meiling, Marlon James, Brianna Mc Carthy, Nina Alcantara, Big Black Box Creative Team and all other team members who played a part in this epic success.
