Postcards from Outside: Jason Audain

It is April 2020, and our world is changing forever. The coronavirus has changed our normal…our normal routines, everyday sights, sounds and our usual spots. For most of us, our new normal now consists of the same faces and the same coloured walls daily. As a result, a lot of us are struggling with how we handle this unforeseen change.

As we heed regulations to stay indoors to help prevent the virus’s spread, virtual moments are emerging as our only touch and connection points. Tormentous as it may seem, there have been equally many magical moments reminding us of the beauty of our world. From online concerts to bedtime story readings to Doubles making sessions, people are sending pieces of love from inside their homes to ours. Technology continues to show how borders can be imaginary and is helping us to manoeuvre the ebb and flow of it all.

Postcards from outside: Trinidad and Tobago

In our new series, Postcards from Outside, we hope to add to the magic of the internet! We are teaming up with some amazing photographers to bring the beauty of Trinidad and Tobago to your homes, virtually. Do you remember the last time you sat to write a postcard to someone? Or got something in your mailbox other than a bill? Well, that smile from the slowness of putting pen to paper or from the unexpected mailbox surprise is one we wish to extend to you during this time.

While our physical postcards wait to be written on again, with no postal service until further notice, our Postcards from Outside series is a reminder of what “outside” looks like. Highlighting some familiar sights that you love and sharing some special moments that we all may have taken for granted. Whether you’re a local experiencing tabanca or you’re looking for reasons to add Trinidad & Tobago to your post-COVID list, these postcards are sent to help keep your spirits high. We hope you take the occasional journey with us “outside” to enjoy T&T until we are free to go outside again.

Photographer: Jason Audain

Our first photographer is the incredible Jason Audain! His daily Instagram stories inspired this series and it would be remiss of us not to start with the exquisite work of this luminary.

Jason Audain is a self-taught photographer who has a real passion for photography. Even now, he is taking photos daily. He is the innovative photographer behind the infamous portraits of T&T’s Traditional Mas characters. His work, whether portraits or landscapes, is identifiable by its richness and humanising feel. His clean photography of places presents a canvas you wish you could insert yourself into. As such, we’re sure you can acknowledge how such a feeling would influence our series.

It was extremely difficult to choose photos for this week’s instalment. Maybe we’ll do another post with more “postcards” of Jason Audain’s work! Be sure to follow Jason Audain on his social media platforms as he continues to supply daily images of outside that is so refreshing. Similarly, visit his website to view his vast portfolio.

Let us know in the comments your favourite postcard from this week. Also, where in Trinidad and Tobago would you like to be right now? We continue sending you postcards from outside, as we all continue to stay safe inside.
